Contemporary dance is a genre of the mid-twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres today.
Contemporary is an expressive dance style that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.
Contemporary works with organic movement of our body while creating new and inventive ways of moving.

Open Beginner and Lyrical

The students will follow the NZAMD contemporary syllabus work to help them develop an understanding of the principles of momentum, contraction and release, use of breath and floor work. They will work towards examinations in September.
They will then prepare and work towards a dance for the End of year concert.
(9 years plus)
Contemporary Open: Students will learn basic contemporary techniques and principles through a variety of different exercises and combinations. They will also learn how to develop their own dance ideas through tasking and improvisation.
Lyrical: Students will learn more advanced Lyrical techniques and principles through a variety of different exercises and combinations.
Classes will work towards performing at the Mid-year Concert and End of Year Concert.
